Farmers Escalate Protests Across Greece

Published January 5, 2026, 05:23

Farmers in Greece have decided to escalate their protests after Epiphany, starting with a 48-hour blockade of major road arteries. Specifically, they will close the Bralos junction, effectively “cutting Greece in two,” as well as sections of the Athens-Thessaloniki National Road (Tempi), the Egnatia Road, the Ionia Road (Siastista), and in the Peloponnese (Nestani), while Nea Malgara will also remain closed. Additionally, blockades will continue at the Evzonas, Niki, Promachonas, Exochi, Ormenio, and Kipi customs posts, as well as on various rural roads. The farmers state they are determined to continue their struggle until their demands are met, emphasizing that they are not afraid of threats and desire a sincere and substantial dialogue with the government. They have already submitted a detailed list of products and their requirements, awaiting a positive response. A key demand of the farmers is the non-signing of the Mercosur agreement, which they believe is harmful to the Greek primary sector. They are seeking protection for Greek products and ensuring fair prices for producers. The agricultural trade unionists express their opposition to any form of state repression and insist that the solution lies in meeting their demands. They emphasize the need for substantial support for the agricultural world and addressing the problems they face, such as payment delays due to ATAK and monitoring.
