Event at European Parliament Highlights Destruction of Cypriot Religious Heritage

An event focusing on the destruction of religious monuments in Cyprus during the Ottoman period was held at the European Parliament, with the participation of MEPs, diplomats, and representatives of the Cypriot Presidency. The event included a photo exhibition depicting the destruction of churches, cemeteries, and Byzantine icons, as well as two churches that had been restored with European funding. Mayors of occupied towns presented testimonies about the destruction, while the poet Kyriakos Charalambidis recited poems about the drama of Cyprus. The speaker described the event as a “function of memory and struggle,” where a “symbolic offering” was shared for the fighters and lost homelands. The event highlighted the cultural genocide in the occupied territories as an extension of the Turkish invasion of 1974 and as a crime against humanity. The presence of an eight-year-old child raised in Brussels symbolized hope for the future and the preservation of memory.
