Eva Schloss, Anne Frank's Stepsister and Holocaust Survivor, Dies at 96

Eva Schloss, step-sister of Anne Frank and a Holocaust survivor, has died at the age of 96 in London. Schloss dedicated her life to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and combating prejudice, co-founding the Anne Frank Trust in 1990. Her family described her as a remarkable woman and dedicated educator. She experienced the persecution of the Nazis from a young age, when her family moved from Austria to Belgium and eventually to Amsterdam, where she lived near Anne Frank. The two girls were friends and often played together before the deportations. Eva’s mother, father, and brother were betrayed and sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944, where they perished. She survived but was separated from her family. After the war, she emigrated to London to study and married Zvi Schloss. The British Royal Family expressed their deep sorrow at the loss of Schloss, recognizing her contribution to Holocaust remembrance. Schloss was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2013 and regained Austrian citizenship in 2021.
