Eurostat: Significant Decrease in Asylum Applications in the EU

According to Eurostat data, November 2025 saw a significant decrease in asylum applications within the European Union, with an overall drop of 26% compared to November 2024. Specifically, 54,825 citizens from third countries submitted applications for international protection, compared to 74,495 the previous year. Simultaneously, there was an increase in subsequent applications by 62%, but a decrease in total applications compared to October 2025. Venezuelans constitute the largest group of asylum seekers, followed by Afghans, Bangladeshis, and Syrians. The majority of applications were recorded in Italy, Spain, France, and Germany, which account for 76% of all applications in the EU. At the EU level, 12.2 applications were recorded per 100,000 inhabitants in November 2025, with Greece, Spain, and Italy showing the highest rates. Additionally, 1,370 unaccompanied minors submitted asylum applications, with most originating from Somalia, Eritrea, Afghanistan, and Venezuela. Cyprus recorded 165 asylum applications in November 2025, significantly reduced compared to the 330 applications in October of the same year. These figures indicate a general trend of decreasing asylum applications in the EU, although the situation varies from country to country.
