Europe's Path to Autonomy: A Necessary Shift

Cyprus, assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, is setting autonomy as a goal for the EU. The need for autonomy arises from the changing international order and the questioning of US reliability, as demonstrated by the Trump presidency. Europe, traditionally dependent on NATO for its security, is being called upon to take greater responsibility for its defense. The new international disorder, where the rivalry between major powers is increasing, makes autonomy a one-way street for the EU in order to ensure its survival and promote its interests. Nostalgia for the old order of things is not a strategy, but the EU must adapt to the new reality.
