European Standards: Key to Competitiveness and Innovation

Maria Theofanous, from the Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation (CYS), emphasizes the importance of European standards for competitiveness and innovation in Europe. Standards are a key tool for supporting industry and the functioning of the single market, while there is also discussion about the need for flexibility and speed in the European Standardisation System, while maintaining its reliability. Standardisation is evolving into a key pillar of European industrial strategy, with the European Commission viewing standards as a lever for strengthening the market, innovation and cross-border activity. The upcoming revision of the European Standardisation Regulation 1025/2012, with a horizon of 2026, aims to create a more functional and responsive system. From the industry side, there is concern that accelerating processes should not lead to excessive politicisation of the field. International alignment, the voluntary nature of standards and their scientific basis remain critical elements for maintaining European influence globally. Delays in standardisation have an economic cost, as they affect the exploitation of innovation and limit market dynamics. Wider participation in the standardisation process, especially from SMEs and start-ups, is considered crucial. National standardisation bodies, such as the CYS in Cyprus, play a key role as a bridge between European policies and the needs of national markets, promoting balanced participation and acceptance of standards.
