European Parliament: Strong Condemnation of the Iranian Regime

The European Parliament strongly condemns the Iranian regime for the violent suppression of protests. The Permanent Rapporteur for relations with Iran, Lukas Furla, described the situation as a continuous violation of fundamental rights, emphasizing that the regime responds to citizens' demands with violence and fear. Mr. Furla referred to shootings of protesters, torture, arbitrary arrests and thousands of deaths, calling on the EU to impose targeted and strict sanctions. The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, highlighted the deterioration of the situation in Iran and the mass protests, while emphasizing that Tehran continues to militarily support Russia. Ms. Kallas called on Iran to release the prisoners and choose dialogue. MEPs denounced the violence and called for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to be designated as a terrorist organization, while warnings were issued about the potential impact of sanctions on civilians. The EU assured that it would react decisively, but noted the lack of consensus on the designation of the IRGC.
