European Grids Struggle to Keep Pace with Renewable Energy Projects

The EU is facing challenges with its electricity grid infrastructure's ability to support the rapid installation of renewable energy projects driven by ambitious green transition goals. In many countries, connection procedures for these projects are extremely lengthy, such as in the Netherlands where waiting lists exceed seven years. In others, like Slovakia, a significant amount of available capacity remains unused due to flawed prioritization criteria. Germany also experiences a shortage of energy storage infrastructure. The European Commission estimates that €1.2 trillion in investments will be needed by 2040 to upgrade the grids and support the energy transition. This issue is not unique to Cyprus, but is common across many EU countries, highlighting the need for coordinated and effective action.
