European Commission Highlights Sea and Culture Museum in Latsi, Cyprus

The European Commission has highlighted the Sea and Culture Museum in Latsi, Cyprus, as a successful project reconnecting the local community with its maritime heritage. The museum, housed in a renovated warehouse, was created with EU funding and offers a modern cultural and educational experience. Exhibitions dedicated to fishermen, sailors, and coastal life are combined with digital technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, providing visitors with an immersive experience. Latsi, a picturesque fishing village in northwestern Cyprus, has seen a change in its tourism activity thanks to the museum. The Polis Chrysochous Municipality and the Paphos Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) leveraged the region's long maritime history to create a museum that connects the village to over 30 centuries of seafaring life. Funding from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund was crucial for the project's implementation. The museum focuses on the people of the sea and their stories, combining archaeological findings with modern digital applications. Visitors can explore the Mediterranean marine life, ancient civilizations, and the history of the Akamas Peninsula through interactive maps, video walls, and digital applications. The experience is multi-layered and connects the past with the present. According to the European Commission, the museum contributes to addressing limited tourist activity outside the summer season and strengthening the local blue economy. The revitalization of Latsi's maritime heritage has created new prospects for the local community and enhances sustainable tourism in the region.
