Cyprus Reassures Tourists Amid Middle East Conflict

Cyprus is responding to safety concerns arising from the conflict in the Middle East, striving to protect its upcoming tourist season. The Deputy Minister of Tourism has assured that Cyprus is hundreds of kilometers away from the war zone, despite the impression the map may give. The discussion began after the drone attack on the Akrotiri British Base. Cypriot authorities emphasize that the country is not part of the conflict and are trying to limit the impact on tourism, which is a significant sector of the economy, accounting for up to 15% of GDP. The Deputy Minister of Tourism stated that Cyprus serves as a pillar of peace and stability in the region. In 2023, the island welcomed 4.5 million visitors, mainly from the United Kingdom, Israel, and Poland. Although bookings have stabilized, the situation remains fluid. Authorities plan to intensify promotional campaigns to limit losses compared to the record year of 2023. However, hotel cancellations have already reached 40% in March and 30% in April.
