EU Rejects Expanding Aspides Mission to Strait of Hormuz

The European Union will not extend Operation Aspides to the Strait of Hormuz, despite proposals to strengthen European presence in the region. The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kajsa Kalas, emphasized that member states do not wish to become further involved in potential escalation. However, there is agreement to strengthen the Aspides naval mission in the Red Sea, aiming to protect commercial shipping. The EU prefers diplomatic solutions and is concerned about potential impacts of the Middle East crisis, including the effect on the war in Ukraine. Finally, the EU is developing a new security strategy, taking into account changing geopolitical conditions.
