EU-India Deal Signals a Different Path Amid Global Fragmentation

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen argues that 2025 will be remembered as a year of heightened geopolitical tensions and economic protectionism, with tariffs and trade barriers becoming instruments of pressure. However, Europe is choosing a different path, strengthening its strategic independence through diversification and maintaining open communication channels with the rest of the world. The EU has already concluded significant trade agreements, such as with Mercosur and recently with India, the largest ever reached with the latter. The India deal is expected to eliminate or reduce tariffs on 90% of trade, saving European exporters up to €4 billion annually and doubling EU exports. This agreement is not only seen as a risk management measure but also as an investment in long-term cooperation with a rapidly growing economy like India.
