EU Defence Commissioner Warns Europe Needs a Unified Army Now

The EU's Defence Commissioner, Andrius Kubilius, is warning that Europe urgently needs a unified military force due to Russia's escalating aggression and the decreasing involvement of the US in European security. He argues that current fragmented efforts are insufficient and that Europe must invest in its defence capability as a single entity, rather than maintaining many small 'bonsai armies'. He proposes the creation of a 100,000-strong European military force and a European Security Council, with the participation of core permanent members, rotating members, and the leadership of the EU, and potentially the United Kingdom, to facilitate faster decision-making on critical defence issues. A lack of unity among member states and insufficient funding are significant obstacles to achieving a strong European defence.
