EU Considers Mutual Assistance Clause for Cyprus

The European Union is considering activating the mutual assistance clause for Cyprus, following recent events. The head of the European Commission's spokesperson, Paula Pinio, stated that the discussion will begin in the coming days. Cyprus is in a sensitive geographical position, given the crisis in the Middle East. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, contacted President Christodoulides, assuring Cyprus of the EU's full support against any threat. The mutual assistance clause, as defined in the Treaty of Lisbon, obliges member states to assist a member state that is under armed attack. At the same time, the solidarity clause is also being considered in the event of a terrorist attack or disaster.
