EU Commissioners Discuss Fisheries and Youth in Cyprus

European Commissioners for Fisheries and Oceans, Kostas Kadis, and for Justice, Youth, Culture and Sports, Glenn Micallef, held meetings in Ayia Napa with young people and professional fishermen. Discussions focused on the environmental challenges facing coastal areas of Cyprus and the Mediterranean, as well as the future of the Blue Economy. Particular emphasis was placed on the need to attract young people to professions such as fishing and aquaculture, and on leveraging the underwater cultural heritage. Mr. Kadis stressed the importance of feedback from young people in shaping policies that meet the needs of the new generation. The European Union is currently developing important initiatives, such as the evaluation of the common fisheries policy, the strategy for generational renewal in the Blue Economy and the vision for fisheries and aquaculture by 2040. Meetings with professional fishermen addressed the challenges they face and ways to improve their working conditions. It was proposed to diversify the profession economically, combining fishing with other activities, such as tourism, to create additional income and ensure the sustainability of the system. Mr. Kadis expressed his belief that Cyprus must adapt to new developments and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Blue Economy, while emphasizing the importance of cooperation and the inclusion of all stakeholders in decision-making.
