The European Union has called for respect of the will of the Venezuelan people following the overthrow of President Nicolás Maduro by the United States. The EU, excluding Hungary, stressed the need for calm and restraint to avoid escalation and achieve a peaceful resolution to the crisis. The Union reiterated the importance of respecting international law and the UN Charter, as well as the responsibility of the Security Council members to uphold these principles. It reaffirmed that Nicolás Maduro does not possess the legitimacy of a democratically elected president and supported a peaceful transition to democracy, led by the Venezuelans themselves. The EU expressed concern over cross-border organized crime and drug trafficking, emphasizing that these must be addressed through international cooperation, with respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty. Finally, the EU called for the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela and assured that the consular authorities of the member states are coordinating to protect EU citizens in the country.
