EU Calls for Respect for the Venezuelan People's Will – 25 Countries and Cyprus Sign

The European Union has called for respect for the will of the Venezuelan people, one day after the United States recognized the overthrow of President Nicolás Maduro. The EU emphasizes that respect for the popular will is the only way to restore democracy and resolve the crisis in Venezuela. In a joint statement, 25 countries (all except Hungary) and Cyprus call on all parties involved to exercise restraint and self-control in order to avoid escalation and ensure a peaceful solution. The EU recalls the importance of respecting international law and the UN Charter. The EU reiterates that Nicolás Maduro does not have the legitimacy of a democratically elected president and supports a peaceful transition to democracy, led by the Venezuelans themselves. At the same time, it expresses concern about cross-border organized crime and drug trafficking, emphasizing the need for cooperation with full respect for international law. The EU is in close contact with the United States and other international partners, with the aim of supporting dialogue and achieving a negotiated, democratic and peaceful solution. Finally, the EU calls for the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela and the protection of human rights.
