The European Union and Jordan held their first joint summit in Amman, with the participation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and Jordan's King Abdullah II. Antonio Costa emphasized the importance of the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership signed a year ago, as well as the need for closer cooperation between the two sides. Discussions focused on the situation in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza and the West Bank, with the EU offering support for restoring order and governance in Gaza through the creation of Palestinian security forces. Jordan was praised for its contribution to addressing the humanitarian crisis. Furthermore, the political transition in Syria and support for the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine were discussed. In the area of security and defense, the summit confirmed the strengthening of cooperation through the European Peace Facility, with the approval of a new €35 million package for the purchase of anti-aircraft defense. Costa also mentioned the implementation of the €3 billion support package for Jordan's Modernization Vision, emphasizing education, research, and innovation. The EU recognized Jordan's important role in addressing the refugee crises in the region and pledged continued support. Overall, the summit marked a further deepening of relations between the EU and Jordan, with a focus on political, security, economic, and humanitarian cooperation.
