Escalating Protests in Iran Amidst Government Crackdown

Protests in Iran, which began 13 days ago, are escalating with mass mobilizations across the country, including in Tehran, Tabriz, and Mashhad. Demonstrators are demanding freedom, while the Iranian government has imposed restrictions on the internet and telephone communications. State television accuses “terrorist elements” supported by the US and Israel of inciting violence and unrest, reporting arson of public and private property. According to the Human Rights Activist News Agency, at least 34 protesters and 4 police officers have been killed, and over 2,200 people have been arrested. Other NGOs report even higher casualty figures. Former US President Donald Trump threatened a harsh response if government forces kill protesters. Reza Pahlavi, son of the late Shah, is calling on citizens to continue their mobilization.
