Erhurman: Turkish Cypriots Don't Want to Pay for Others' Mistakes

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman expressed concern over military alliances and agreements concluded by the Republic of Cyprus, arguing that they aim to balance power against Turkey, an effort he considers unrealistic and dangerous for the island's security. He stressed that these efforts also endanger the Turkish Cypriot people without their consent. Erhurman stated that this situation is inconsistent with the status quo on the island and is unfair, while avoiding commenting on discussions about the British Bases and Andreas Papandreou airbase. He emphasized that tourism is the main source of income for both sides, and jeopardizing security threatens the economy. He referred to reports in the Greek Cypriot press regarding the negative impact of the events on tourism, as well as statements by the Republic of Cyprus Government that are being projected in the international press, creating the impression that Cyprus is not a safe place. He noted that the military presence of various countries on the island is already significant. Erhurman concluded by emphasizing that the Turkish Cypriot people do not want to pay the price for mistakes that are not their own, and that their will is illegally ignored. He expressed his hope for an immediate end to the war.
