Erhurman: Military Balancing Act with Turkey is Unrealistic

T/C leader Tufan Erhurman expressed the view that efforts to achieve a military balance in Cyprus against Turkey are unrealistic and endanger the safety of the island and its inhabitants, including the T/C. He argued that these efforts ignore the will of the Turkish Cypriot people, who are one of the two equal founding partners of the island. Erhurman avoided commenting on discussions regarding the British Bases and Andreas Papandreou airbase, but emphasized that the island's security is inextricably linked to tourism and the economy. He noted that the military presence of various countries on the island is a cause for concern and that reports in the international press regarding the safety of Cyprus are negative. Finally, Erhurman expressed his hope for an immediate end to hostilities and stressed the need for the Turkish Cypriot people not to pay the price for mistakes that are not their own.
