EOAL: Decisions must be made for livestock with a strategic plan

The President of the Provincial Organization of Self-Government of Larnaca, Angelos Chatzicharalambous, expressed his concern about the tragic situation of the primary sector due to foot-and-mouth disease. He stressed the need to make decisions with a specific strategic plan to save the sector, proposing that not all animals in a livestock unit where cases are detected should be slaughtered, but only those that are positive for the virus. Mr. Chatzicharalambous assured that the EOAL Larnaca is at the disposal of the state and the Ministry of Agriculture to assist in the fight against the disease, while expressing his solidarity with the livestock farmers, emphasizing their despair due to lack of planning. In addition, he mentioned the economic impact of the war in Iran and warned that the situation will worsen in the event of an increase in foot-and-mouth disease cases in other areas of Cyprus, calling on the competent Ministries to take immediate measures to protect the primary sector and support livestock farmers. Expressing the worsening of the situation due to a new case in Dromolaxia, Mr. Chatzicharalambous announced that the EOAL Larnaca will participate in the meeting of the Agriculture Committee of the House of Representatives on March 10, where the issue of foot-and-mouth disease will be discussed, reiterating the proposal for targeted slaughter of animals.
