Environmental Commissioner's Recommendations for Carnival Celebrations

The Environmental Commissioner and Animal Welfare Commissioner, Antonia Theodosiou, has issued a recommendation to the public ahead of Carnival celebrations, calling for the responsible use of festive products such as foam sprays, streamers, and confetti. The recommendation aims to protect the health of citizens and the environment. The announcement emphasizes the importance of reading and following the instructions and precautions on product packaging, especially by adults purchasing them for children. Improper use can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. The need to avoid the use of lightweight plastic items, such as confetti and balloons, which are carried by the wind and end up in the natural environment, breaking down into microplastics with negative consequences for the environment and human health, is highlighted. Finally, the Commissioner calls on local authorities to place special bins for Carnival materials and urges the public to use them, avoiding littering in the streets, which can cause slipperiness and injuries.
