Environmental Commissioner: Cyprus' Land Under Threat – “Cyprus’ Environmental Problems are Deeply Cultural Issues”

In an interview, the Environmental Commissioner and Animal Welfare Commissioner, Antonia Theodosiou, outlines the critical state of the environment in Cyprus. She points out that environmental problems are multifaceted, linked to economic development, management, but also culture and lifestyle. Cyprus faces 16 active infringement procedures under EU environmental legislation, with some cases referred to the European Court of Justice for years of non-compliance. One of the most pressing issues is water scarcity, which has become a permanent condition. The dominant approach is based on desalination, which however has a high energy cost and increases the carbon footprint. The solution, according to the Commissioner, lies in a holistic management of water resources and a fair distribution of water. Theodosiou emphasizes the need for a change of mindset and a more sustainable management of the natural environment. Protecting nature, managing waste, and tackling climate change are priorities that require immediate action. The Commissioner acknowledges the challenges but expresses hope that with coordinated efforts and political will, Cyprus will be able to address its environmental problems and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
