Election Law Amended Regarding Vacant Parliamentary Seats

The plenary session of the Parliament unanimously approved a bill amending the legislation concerning the election of members of the House of Representatives, specifically regarding by-elections in the event of a vacant seat. The amendment concerns extending the deadline for holding by-elections, as the initial 45-day period is considered unfeasible during periods of large-scale electoral processes. The Chairman of the Interior Committee, Aristos Damianou, clarified that the amendment does not concern an extension of the term, but has a purely practical purpose, to avoid elections in the middle of summer. The proposal originates from the Ministry of Interior.
