Saudi Arabia Seeks to Reroute East to Med Corridor Through Syria

Saudi Arabia is seeking to change the route of the East to Med Corridor (EMC) fiber optic project, replacing Israel with Syria as a transit country. This move reflects a shift in regional balances and Saudi Arabia's effort to strengthen Syria's position. The EMC project, which aims to transfer high-speed data between the Gulf and Europe, was announced in 2022. The route change may affect Greece-Israel relations, given the close strategic cooperation between the two countries. Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia is also promoting a high-voltage (HVDC) energy interconnection through Syria and has announced investments in Damascus's telecommunications infrastructure.
