E-Scooter "Time Bombs" on Cyprus Roads: Police Call for Increased Enforcement

The Cyprus Police acknowledge the increasing use of e-scooters and the associated risks, but state they cannot address the problem alone. They propose strengthening law enforcement with more active involvement of municipal traffic wardens, as e-scooter traffic primarily occurs within urban centers. The Police have already issued nearly 4,000 out-of-court fines during 2023-2024, indicating the frequency of violations. They also suggest tightening the legal framework, including vehicle impoundment for use in prohibited areas. It is emphasized that e-scooter users are vulnerable and face increased risks, especially on roads with speed limits exceeding 30 km/h, where their use is prohibited. The identification of all the deceased and injured from the tragedy in Crans Montana has been completed.
