Train Services Between China-N. Korea to Resume After Six Years

Published March 10, 2026, 12:03

Passenger train services between China and North Korea will resume on Thursday, six years after they were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel between the two countries stopped in 2020, as strict border closures were imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. China has fully opened its borders, while North Korea is proceeding at a slower pace, although direct flights and rail services with Russia resumed last year. Chinese workers and students in North Korea can now purchase train tickets, as can North Koreans working or studying abroad. However, there are still restrictions for tourists. The resumption of services is seen as a positive development, but caution is required as similar announcements have proven untrue in the past. China is North Korea’s largest supporter and a critical economic lifeline.
