The President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Annita Demetriou, chaired a meeting in Aradippou with livestock farmers and stakeholders regarding the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. Ms. Demetriou emphasized the need for immediate containment of the virus and support for farmers whose livelihoods are threatened. Emphasis was placed on the need for clear guidance from the state regarding the measures and protocols to be followed, as well as their review in the event of new data. The livestock farmers expressed concerns about the lack of communication from the authorities and the prevailing uncertainty. They requested clarification regarding the possibility of double testing of asymptomatic animals and the procedure to be followed in the event of animal death. Additionally, they reported shortcomings in disinfection issues, especially at the port. Ms. Demetriou assured that DISY would support any necessary measure to strengthen state procedures and effectively manage the crisis. She stressed that it is not time for assigning blame, but for responsibility and cooperation. She expressed hope that the virus would remain limited to a specific area. The meeting took place in an atmosphere of anxiety and uncertainty, with livestock farmers expressing their fear of the economic devastation that could be caused by the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.
