DR Congo: Two Mass Graves with 172 Bodies Found After Rebel Withdrawal

Two mass graves containing at least 172 bodies have been found in the city of Uvira, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, following the withdrawal of rebels from the AFC/M23 organization. The rebels had occupied the city in December and withdrew a week later, under international pressure. The governor of South Kivu province, Jean-Jacques Purusi, announced the discovery of the graves, containing 31 and 141 bodies respectively. Local activists report the existence of other graves in the area. Human Rights Watch had reported executions by M23 fighters in Uvira in December. The AFC/M23 denies any involvement, accusing the government of propaganda. The organization controls parts of the Kivu provinces and continues to be involved in fighting despite mediation efforts. Rwanda denies accusations that it supports M23.
