Don't Ban E-Scooters: A Plea for Sustainable Mobility in Cyprus

Published February 18, 2026, 12:23

In Cyprus, where traffic congestion and the cost of living are significant issues, micromobility, particularly electric scooters, is gaining popularity. However, the increase in their use has sparked reactions from car drivers and MPs, leading to proposals for a complete ban on their circulation. These proposals range from stricter supervision and user registration to a total ban, with the Ministry of Transport receiving an ultimatum to address the issue. Despite concerns about road safety, a ban is considered counterproductive, as each scooter replaces a car, reducing traffic congestion, pollution, and the need for parking spaces. The solution lies in better regulation and the development of infrastructure, in accordance with European legislation that defines electric scooters with speeds up to 25 km/h as bicycles.
