DISY to Decide on Nikos Sykas' Candidacy Tonight - Emergency Executive Bureau Meeting Held

The Political Bureau of the Democratic Rally (DISY) is meeting tonight to decide on the future of Limassol MP Nikos Sykas, who is facing a police investigation into a serious abuse case. The party's Executive Bureau met earlier today to discuss the matter and the handling of the situation ahead of tonight's session. Despite efforts to persuade the MP to withdraw voluntarily, he does not appear to intend to do so. The leadership and the majority of the DISY parliamentary group believe that removing Nikos Sykas from the Limassol ballot is the only solution, given the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing police investigation. It is emphasized that the party leadership acted correctly from the outset, demonstrating political responsibility. While the presumption of innocence is acknowledged, the existence of a police investigation into a serious matter necessitates his removal from the ballot, as is the case with other officials or public employees facing charges. The party cannot wait for the completion of the investigations and legal proceedings, as this could take a long time. There are reports of potential withdrawals by other candidates from the party's ballot, should the Political Bureau's decision differ from the initial recommendation. However, at present, there is no question of expelling Nikos Sykas from the parliamentary group or the party.
