Disobedience Issue for the Holy Synod: Tychikos' Appeal to Political Courts

Published January 7, 2026, 09:28

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus considers Bishop Tychikos' appeal to political courts as an act of disobedience. Archbishopric Spokesman Christakis Eustathiou stated that the Synod will convene urgently tomorrow, Thursday, to discuss the issue, as well as other important changes to the Statutory Charter. Bishop Tychikos, through a written notification, announced his intention to claim the Metropolis of Paphos in political courts, challenging the decision of the Holy Synod and bypassing the advice of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The Church of Cyprus insists that ecclesiastical matters must be resolved internally and does not recognize the jurisdiction of political courts in such cases.
