Discontent in Nicosia Towards London Regarding British Bases – “We Rule Nothing Out” Says Letymbiotis

The Cypriot government expresses strong discontent towards the United Kingdom for the lack of clear assurance that the British Bases in Cyprus will not be used for purposes beyond humanitarian ones. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the government “rules nothing out” in this context. Despite assurances from the British Prime Minister, there was no clear clarification that the bases would not be used for other purposes. Mr Letymbiotis stated that he had received a clarifying position from the British Foreign Minister, but reiterated the Cypriot position for the strictly humanitarian use of the bases. The government will make representations and contacts with London to express its discontent and the lack of timely information to residents near the Akrotiri bases. In addition, the National Council discussed the measures taken and being taken following the incident at the Akrotiri base. The government spokesman leaves open the possibility of renegotiating the status of the Bases, as supported by former Attorney General Kostas Kliridis. Cyprus wishes to maintain its role as a humanitarian hub.
