Dian in New York to Brief UN Security Council

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, Kazim Dian, is in New York to brief the UN Security Council on developments in the island. He is expected to inform representatives of countries contributing to UNFICYP and the Security Council on January 15th, based on the new reports of the UN Secretary-General. He will also have meetings with the UN Secretary-General and the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations. Simultaneously, a reduction in the budget for the Office of the Special Advisor on Cyprus by 37.7% for 2026 is being considered, including the abolition of eight positions, due to the absence of official negotiations since 2017 and the appointment of a Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus. The position of Special Advisor remains vacant, and the abolition of jobs in the Good Offices is being considered, which raises concerns about the frequency of activities.
