Diabetes Costs Cyprus €300 Million Annually, Over 106,000 Cases

Diabetes is one of the most widespread and costly chronic diseases in Cyprus, with over 106,000 diabetics. The annual cost to the healthcare system is estimated at an average of €2,700 per person, or approximately €280-290 million. The number of diabetics in Cyprus has increased by 30% in the last 13 years, and projections for 2050 are even more worrying, with estimates of 140,000 diabetics. This means that today, one in nine adults in Cyprus lives with diabetes. Globally, diabetes ranks among the diseases with the greatest economic impact, with a cost that can reach up to 1.7% of global GDP if informal care provided by families is also taken into account. The study highlights that the economic burden of diabetes is comparable to or even greater than that of other serious diseases, such as cancer or dementia, due to the long-term nature of the disease and the complications that accompany it. Addressing diabetes is therefore a significant challenge for the healthcare system and the economy of Cyprus.
