Deterrent Penalties or Discounts? Debate over Traffic Fine System in Cyprus

The question of whether traffic fines in Cyprus are truly deterrent is being raised again, following the implementation of the new legislation for the grading of fines from fixed cameras. The new legislation reduces the fine for stopping on a pedestrian crossing at traffic lights from €300 to €85, while the €300 fine remains for stopping or moving beyond the crossing with a red light. At the same time, the issue of placing beacons on vehicles with cameras has been raised, so that drivers know where the cameras are and comply only in those areas. The main question remains whether the reduced penalties will be enough to discipline drivers and improve road safety.
