Denmark Rejects Trump's Greenland Pursuit

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has responded to remarks by Donald Trump regarding the possibility of the United States taking control of Greenland, asking him to “stop the threats.” Frederiksen emphasized that the US has no right to annex Greenland and that Denmark, as a member of NATO, has collective security guarantees. Her reaction was triggered by a post on social media by Katie Miller, wife of a close Trump associate, presenting Greenland in the colors of the American flag with the message “SOON.” Trump, for his part, reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland, citing national security reasons and arguing that Denmark cannot protect the island. He expressed the view that Greenland's strategic location is important, as there is increased presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the area. The Danish ambassador to the US responded to Miller's post, reminding of the alliance between the two countries and requesting respect for Denmark's territorial integrity. Frederiksen highlighted that Denmark already has a defense agreement with the US providing access to the island and has increased its defense investments in the Arctic. The situation remains tense, with Denmark maintaining a firm stance in its refusal to discuss the sale or cession of Greenland to the US. Frederiksen urges the US to respect Denmark's sovereignty and the desire of the Greenlandic people to remain autonomous.
