Delcy Rodriguez Sworn In as Interim President of Venezuela

Delcy Rodriguez has been officially sworn in as the interim president of Venezuela, while Nicolas Maduro appeared in a New York court to face drug trafficking charges. The 56-year-old Rodriguez, a labor leader known for her close ties to the private sector and loyalty to the ruling party, was sworn in by her brother, Jorge, who is the president of the National Assembly. Also sworn in were 283 deputies elected last May, most of whom are pro-government. The opposition, particularly the faction led by Maria Corina Machado, recently awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, boycotted the process. Rodriguez stated she felt “pain” over the “kidnapping” of Maduro and his wife, but also “honor” in swearing in as president on behalf of all Venezuelans. Maduro, in court, declared himself the president of Venezuela and a “prisoner of war.” Maduro’s arrest marks an escalation in US policy towards Venezuela, based on sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and economic pressure, aimed at regime change.
