Defense Committee: Insurance Coverage for National Guard Personnel on Dangerous Missions

The Parliamentary Defense Committee approved a regulatory arrangement providing insurance coverage for National Guard personnel participating in dangerous missions. This arrangement, in addition to the allowance they already receive, ensures financial compensation to the family or dependents in the event of death or permanent disability while performing their duties, compensation that will not be taxed. The discussion in the Defense Committee concerned the “2025 Regulations” and insurance coverage in the event of death or permanent total work disability. The regulation resulted from consultations with the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff of the National Guard, and the Legal Service. The Chairman of the Committee, Marinos Sizopoulos, stated that this arrangement is an important step in securing the professional rights of National Guard personnel. He also noted that a gradual extension of insurance coverage to all professional personnel of the National Guard is being considered. Regarding the possibility of sending troops to other countries, Mr. Sizopoulos replied that the issue has been under discussion since 2024, but required further processing due to objections from various parts of the public service. The new regulation paves the way for insurance coverage for personnel and its possible extension to the entire staff.
