$100 Million Deal for Maria Angelikousa Amidst Gulf Crisis

Greek shipowner Maria Angelikousa has secured a deal worth approximately $100 million for the five-year charter of the oil tanker Maran Arete, during a period of heightened uncertainty in the shipping market due to the crisis in the Middle East. The agreement with a Swiss energy trader stipulates a daily rate of around $55,000. The crisis in the Middle East has led to a surge in freight rates for large tankers, with three-year contracts reaching $70,000 per day and annual contracts $115,000. Daily rates of $130,000 are also being discussed. Insurance costs have also increased significantly due to war risks, with premiums more than tenfold. The situation has limited the availability of ships and led to the use of alternative routes, such as via the Cape of Good Hope. The increase in freight rates and high insurance costs is expected to continue if the situation in the Middle East worsens.
