Deadline Change for By-election to Fill Vacant Parliamentary Seat, Approved by Parliament

Parliament unanimously approved a bill amending the Law on the Election of Members of Parliament, revising the deadline for holding a by-election to fill a vacant parliamentary seat. The original provision required the election to be held within 45 days. The amendment was made through an urgent procedure, as holding elections within 45 days may be unfeasible in cases of simultaneous major electoral processes. The amendment gives the executive branch the power to determine the election date, avoiding its holding during the summer. The chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Interior, Aristos Damianos, explained that the amendment is being made for practical reasons and does not concern an extension of the term, but the avoidance of difficulties in holding elections in specific periods.
