Dazed MENA: Why Are We So 'Obsessed' with Archives?

Salma Mousa explores the Arab need for archiving and its relationship to the feeling of erasure, particularly in the case of Palestine. She argues that archiving, while appearing to preserve memory, can actually reinforce a sense of loss and contribute to the colonial logic of turning people into objects of study, while leaving their future uncertain. The author criticizes the tendency to frame Palestinian existence as memory and loss, rather than as an ongoing struggle for freedom, and cites examples of museums and digital archives that, in her view, reproduce this colonial logic.
