Damianou: First General Approach for the Carbon and Steel Fund

The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nikodimos Damianou, announced the adoption of the first general approach for the Carbon and Steel Research Fund during the Competitiveness Council (COMPET) in Brussels. The decision paves the way for continued research in the areas of carbon and steel until 2034. The Deputy Minister stressed that this approach implements the commitment of the Cypriot Presidency for pragmatism and results orientation. He noted that the Carbon and Steel Research Fund, the Horizon Europe package, the European Innovation Act and the next framework program FP10 are central pillars of the agenda. The Fund is linked to the goals of the green transition, without undermining the competitiveness of European industry, strengthening the sustainability and competitiveness of the carbon and steel sectors. Particular reference was made to the next framework program for research and innovation, FP10, with the aim of strengthening research capacities and attracting talent to Europe. The Cypriot Presidency is working to achieve a partial general approach at the next Council in May, leveraging the political guidance of the Member States. Finally, the importance of international cooperation and scientific diplomacy was underlined.
