Damascus Regains Control in Northeastern Syria: Kurds Swept Aside

The Syrian army, with the help of militias, has regained control of areas in northeastern Syria that had been under Kurdish control for over a decade. The fall of Raqqa, the former 'capital' of ISIS, has particular political significance. This advance gives Damascus control of significant oil fields and energy installations, undermining the economic viability of Kurdish autonomy. Although a ceasefire has been announced between the Syrian army and Kurdish forces, clashes have not completely stopped. Washington has expressed concerns that the redeployment of forces will weaken the fight against the remnants of ISIS.
