Cyprus Will Not Sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons – Says Foreign Minister

Cyprus will not accede to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), despite its support for nuclear disarmament and nuclear safety. This decision is based on the fact that states possessing nuclear weapons have not signed the treaty, making a complete ban on nuclear weapons difficult. There is also reluctance from several states, including EU member states, due to potential risks to security balances. Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos stated that Cyprus supports international efforts for nuclear disarmament through its participation in other treaties, such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Cyprus ratified the relevant law for the NPT in 1970. Cyprus's decision not to sign the TPNW does not mean it is abandoning the effort for a world without nuclear weapons, but it believes that the treaty is not effective at this stage due to the lack of participation of nuclear powers.
