Cyprus Welcomes US House Committee's Approval of Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act

The Republic of Cyprus has welcomed the passage of the Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act by the US House Foreign Affairs Committee. The legislation recognizes the importance of the IMEC corridor for the United States, with a particular focus on Cyprus as a key hub. Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos described the development as part of the strengthening of Cyprus-US relations at both the executive and legislative levels. The Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act, according to Mr. Kombos, aims to guide US foreign policy regarding the IMEC and the Eastern Mediterranean. It will require reports to the US legislative body on how US foreign policy aligns with the parameters set by the legislator. The process for the final approval of the bill involves a vote in the House of Representatives and then in the Senate, where a similar process will be followed. The initial vote in the Foreign Affairs Committee was overwhelming, with 45 votes in favor and only 2 against. Mr. Kombos emphasized that the legislation highlights the strategic importance of Cyprus to the United States, particularly in relation to the IMEC, trilateral collaborations, and relations with other countries in the region, such as Egypt and India. Cyprus is considered an important factor that should be taken into account by the US executive branch when shaping its policy in the region.
