Cyprus Talks Stall, Threatening Peace Efforts

Talks between the two Cypriot leaders, Nikos Christodoulides and Erhan Arıklı, failed to reach an agreement on opening new crossing points along the Green Line. This failure is a setback for UN efforts to build trust and revitalize the peace process, which has been stalled for eight years. The postponement of the informal “5+1” meetings further indicates a worsening situation. The UN Security Council warned that the status quo is unsustainable and that the lack of agreement exacerbates tensions and risks irreversible changes. Crossing points are considered vital for communication between the two communities, but the leaders have failed to agree on restarting negotiations.
