Cyprus Talks Hit Snag: Erhurman Raises Sovereignty Equality Concerns

Hopes for a resolution to the Cyprus issue are diminishing, just before the return of Maria Angela Holguin to the island. The Turkish Cypriot leader, Erhurman, openly spoke of “sovereign equality,” effectively reversing the December 11th communiqué. While a meeting with the President of the Republic has been scheduled, the joint meeting of the leaders with Holguin has not yet been finalized. Erhurman, during his meeting with the Turkish Vice President, emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot people have equal sovereign rights on the island, while the Turkish Vice President reiterated Ankara's positions on a two-state solution. The Greek Cypriot side expresses strong concern about the development.
