Cyprus Supreme Court Rejects Former Bishop's Appeal Again

The Cyprus Supreme Court has rejected, for a second time, the appeal of former Bishop of Paphos, Tychikos, seeking to overturn the decisions of the Holy Synod and the Ecumenical Patriarchate that deposed him. Tychikos had requested an extension to file a petition for prerogative orders, arguing he had not been given sufficient time to prepare his defense. According to his petition, the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus deposed Tychikos on May 22, 2025, with the decision being ratified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate on October 17, 2025. Tychikos claims he was not allowed legal representation during the Patriarchate's session, but submitted a memorandum prepared by his lawyer. However, the court ruled that Tychikos had full knowledge of the Holy Synod's decision from the day it was issued and that the refusal to extend the deadline was due to the fact that the application for prerogative orders had already been filed. Judge Elena Efraim emphasized that Tychikos's participation in the proceedings implied full knowledge of both the process and its details. From his side, Tychikos referred to health issues he faced and the saga of his submissions, but the court did not accept his arguments for extending the deadline, thus confirming the initial rejection of his appeal.
